EAA and the Young Eagle Program

Ever hear of the EAA? Young Eagles? Join us to learn about the Experimental Aircraft Association and the Young Eagle program. Learn why there is a place in EAA for anyone interested in aviation and how our local EAA chapter manages to safely fly hundreds of Young Eagles every year.

Our speaker will tell us about EAA, its history and local chapter activities. He will spend most of his presentation informing us about the Young Eagle program, which gives children ages 8 to 17 an opportunity to experience flight in a general aviation airplane while educating them about aviation. We will learn about pilot requirements and safety practices when flying Young Eagles, including process flow, crowd safety, taxi procedures on the ramp and safe practices for conducting the demo flights.

About our speaker:

Jeff West is the Young Eagles Co-Coordinator and past board member for EAA Chapter 62. He is also a private pilot with just over 300 hours flight time.

He began his flight training in 1991 at Amelia Reid Aviation while still a junior in high school then had to abandon flying for a while but was able to return to the sky in 2005 and earn his license in 2006. Jeff immediately joined the two most prominent organizations that advocate for general aviation: EAA and AOPA. Within a year of joining, he became a director for EAA Chapter 62 and, soon after, his passion for the Young Eagles program brought him into the role as Young Eagle coordinator for the chapter. He now continues to serve in the role of co-coordinator.

Switching to ICAO Flight Plan Filing: New form required starting January 2017, with CFII Brian Eliot

The FAA has announced mandatory transition to the International (ICAO) Flight Plan Form 7233-4 that will occur in January 2017.  The new ICAO Flight Plan form was already required to obtain certain types of in-flight ATC services and routing. It now must be used for all IFR and VFR flight planning, replacing the domestic flight plan form we have used for decades.
Join flight instructor Brian Eliot for a seminar that provides crucial understanding of how to complete the many new data fields in Form 7233-4. He will describe the background leading up to the change and what sorts of pilot services are based on information provided in the flight plan.  He will also present typical airplane avionics configurations and how to translate those to the navigation and surveillance profiles encoded in the flight plan form, and will briefly review what automation the flight planning service providers are making available to pilots to assist  them through this transition.

SCAPA's Disaster Airlift Response Team (SCAPA DART) had a flurry of end-of-year news, including FEMA Community Preparedness Certificates for the DART program, and recognition by the Santa Clara County Emergency Manager's Association for Paul Marshall for his efforts to build up general aviation disaster airlift capabilities. DART programs patterned on the SCAPA DART model are spreading across the state of California, with nine on the way so far. And there's a work day scheduled for the DART hangar on Sunday afternoon, January 15th (Hangar J10, on the last row of county hangars facing the county tie down ramp) where you can drop by between 1pm and 5pm and help out. You can read all about this and more in the latest SCAPA DART Newsletter.

The Santa Clara County Airports Department has a new web form for requesting airport maintenance or reporting issues at E16 or RHV - just click on this link, fill out and submit the web form, and the issue you've reported will be automatically transmitted into the Airports Department staff's work queue. Airports head honcho Eric Peterson says using this form will make it easier for the Airports team to track issues and make sure they get resolved.
